Day 23. 10 small moments
1. He thinks that the strawberries taste like onions. I think they taste like beets. They’re vegetal tasting either way, and I explain that they’re organic — as if this provides a suitable excuse for strawberries to not taste like strawberries.
2. It’s 9:20, and he asks for a meeting at 11, and then at 10. And then it’s canceled as we’re pulling out of the driveway. I think he forgets how challenging it is to get them in the car and make it on time to anything. I sit for a minute with the car parked and the windows open while pretending to listen to NPR.
3. He asks if I can do Legos with him all morning, and he finally wears me down. I give him an exact time, and explain that it will be in 30 minutes.. He checks the clock and yells up the stairs each blessed and individual digit every 5 minutes.
4. Strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert after lunch. Not organic.
5. I start preparing and packing for another trip. I feel slightly sheepish that I haven't fully unpacked from my last trip, but I shrug and throw back in the flip flops anyway.
6. I call a different caterer. One who I think will take better care of me. At this point in my life, that is simply all I am asking to pay for.
7. We step outside to enjoy a small moment of warmth. The lilies of the valley are so delicate and demure, and I feel like they're steeped with tiny fairy magic... They're also poisonous AF, and therefore, slightly bad ass on the inside. #goals
8. After working on a Lego cafe for an hour, the boys start dismantling the better parts of it to add on to their own enterprises. I feel slightly offended until I remember that I have laundry to fold and tedious house work to get done... "And miles to go before I sleep,. And miles to go before I sleep."
9. They're wearing bow ties and look adorable. I dress her in a super comfy dress and we roll to the 80th birthday party almost 2 hours away. The entire drive is spent catching up with him and hearing about the play by play of the day. I watch him as he drives and he looks gaunt to me.
10. The surprise was a success! He had no idea, and I find that charming in this day of rapid knowledge sharing. And it was so great to see all of them.
